Professor Doron Bauer has received a 2018-2019 Committee on Faculty Research Support (COFRS) award from the FSU Council on Research and Creativity. This award will help fund research for Dr. Bauer’s upcoming monograph, Cities Upon Cities: The Aesthetic Colonization of Conquered Islamic Urban Centers on the Other Coast of the Mediterranean, from Ceuta to Tel Aviv. The goal of the book is to analyze the artistic and cultural implications of conquered Islamic cities across North Africa and the Middle East. Bauer plans to offer a “deep history of colonial paradigms” spanning art historical fields from medieval to contemporary – topics that have been the subject of Dr. Bauer’s recent graduate seminars, Interconnectivity and Exchange in the Middle Ages and West and East: The Interlocked Gaze.

The Council praised Dr. Bauer’s proposal for the project’s potential to “make important contributions to colonial studies that will interest Art Historians and scholars in other fields interested in collective memory, identity, and colonization.”
