Sarah C. Simmons presented her paper, “He Who Points the Way: The Hodegetria as Political Identity on the Patriarchal Seals of Photios” at the 14th Postgraduate Colloquium at the University of Birmingham, Birmingham, England. This international colloquium sponsored by the Centre of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Modern Greek Studies took place on May 25th, 2013.
Sarah’s paper questions why Patriarch Photios appropriated the iconography of the Hodegetria featured on his seals. She examines how this iconography reflected and perpetuated the ongoing political tensions caused by the Iconoclast Controversy.
