“More Than Words: Strategies for Meaningful Digital Engagement—and the
Challenges of Actually Getting It Done in a Museum Environment”
Often categorized as just an offshoot of marketing or communications, digital engagement is in fact its own two-way, fiercely relevant, uniquely human monster—and doing it well starts with embracing that. From social media and virtual events to apps, influencer programs, digital fundraising, and more, we’ll examine what DE looks like at a major museum, get into real talk about the challenges that DE teams face, explore how the pandemic has impacted museums’ need for DE support, and discuss what it all means for emerging DE professionals.
Laurel C. Allen is Senior Digital-Engagement & Community Manager for the California Academy of Sciences, where she oversees a social-media community of 3MM+, digital special-projects (apps, AR lenses, VR experiences, 360-object creative), and works with curators and researchers to help them better communicate their expertise. Her work leans heavily on a background in brand strategy and cultural research, and her areas of focus include social-media (paid and organic), persona/voice-and-tone development, meaningful influencer programs, and how to stay as human as your followers are in any efforts to get their attention.
Allen is an Explorers Club Fellow and Shorty Award winner. Her essays have appeared in Fast Company, Gizmodo, 000 Magazine, Indefinitely Wild, Modern Farmer, Alert Diver, and more.
