Professor Jolles Receives Franklin Research Grant

Published May 30, 2016

ProfessoProfessor Adam Jollesr Adam Jolles has been awarded a Franklin Research Grant from the American Philosophical Society to support research toward his next book project, a study of the curatorial history of photography in the United States. The grant will underwrite travel to the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona in Tucson and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, two of the major photography archives and collections in the country. Professor Jolles’s research project broadly examines correlations between the rise of photography as a field of intellectual inquiry in the United States, the emergence of a set of curatorial practices for displaying and collecting the medium, and significant shifts in the ambitions and practice of artistic photography. The first phase of his research attends to the converging interests in sequential photography of the George Eastman House and the Kodak Corporation in Rochester in the 1960s.
