Thursby Visiting Scholar Lecture Series Presents: Patricia Mainardi, April 7

This spring as part of the Thursby Visiting Scholar Lecture Series the Department of Art History is pleased to host Patricia Mainardi, professor of art history at the Graduate Center, City University of New York.  Professor Mainardi will present “Spreading the News: The Invention of the Illustrated Press in the Nineteenth Century” on Thursday, April 7 at 6:00 pm in room G40 WJB.

Professor Mainardi specializes in 18th- and 19th-century European and American art. She has taught at Harvard University, Princeton University and Williams College, and is currently a Visiting Distinguished Professor at Beijing Jiaotong University.  She has published widely in nineteenth-century European art history. Her first book, Art and Politics of the Second Empire:  The Universal Expositions of 1855 and 1867 (Yale University Press, 1987), was awarded the College Art Association’s Charles Rufus Morey Award.  Her other publications include The End of the Salon:  Art and the State in the Early Third Republic (Cambridge University Press, 1993); Husbands, Wives, and Lovers:  Marriage and Its Discontents in Nineteenth-Century France (Yale University Press, 2003),  Another World: Nineteenth-Century Illustrated Print Culture (forthcoming, Yale University Press), and numerous exhibition catalogs, articles, essays, and reviews.
