Art History Facilities
The Department of Art History at Florida State University is housed in the William Johnston Building (WJB), an historic structure at the heart of the original campus. Built in 1939 and renovated in 2011, WJB features original art nouveau salt-glazed tiles, sculptural reliefs, and hand-painted cork ceiling tiles. The renovation added a bright four-story atrium with floating staircase, terrazzo floors, and steel and glass walls, as well as state-of-the-art classrooms and labs.
Rose Library
Art History manages the Rose Library, a collection established in a tiny office in 2003 when retiring Professor Emerita and longtime chair Patricia Rose donated 1,100 art history books to the department. In 2011 the library was relocated into a 2,500-square-foot space overlooking the WJB atrium (WJB 2020). Thanks to subsequent donations by College of Fine Arts friends and retiring faculty, the library now houses 10,000 books, which have been catalogued by Art History graduate assistants and are being incorporated into the FSU Libraries database for ease of research. The collection is non-circulating, but books may be read or scanned in the library. The Rose Library also serves as a study and gathering space for CFA students, and for all students in WJB when supervision is available.
Computer Lab
The Departments of Art Education and Art History share a Computer Lab (WJB 2040) outfitted with 24 student iMacs, one instructor iMac attached to an LCD projector, one Dell workstation with photogrammetry software, and an FSU Card print station. Installed software includes Microsoft Office, the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, and Filemaker Pro. When not reserved for classes or workshops and when monitors are available, the lab is open to all students in WJB. Art History and Art Education students may request access by contacting their department representatives.
WJB Gallery
The WJB Gallery (WJB 1085) is an 1100-square-foot exhibition space shared and managed by the departments of the College of Fine Arts. The 24 x 46-foot glass-walled gallery stretches the length of the central five-story WJB atrium, providing rich natural lighting and secure but vivid public exposure for exhibitions. All exhibitions in the WJB Gallery are curated by or display works by students of the College of Fine Arts. Faculty and students develop exhibitions in consultation with a gallery committee of representatives from each department and the Museum of Fine Arts. The Gallery often serves as the venue for exhibitions curated by the Art History undergraduate Museum Object class and by graduate student curators in our Museum & Cultural Heritage Studies MA program.
Practical Matters
Keys & Swipe Access
Art History classrooms, labs, and TA offices are accessed via FSUCard swipe. To request swipe access, email Jean Hudson; be sure to include the last 8 digits of your FSUCard number. If you lock keys or FSUcard in a room after hours, call Campus Police at 644-1234. They have master keys to every office, though if by chance their keys don’t work, you may need to coordinate with the Police (who can check your identity) and FSU Facilities (who also have master keys): 644-2424.
Classroom Use
The Department of Art History manages the schedules for two lecture rooms and two seminar rooms in WJB. FSU faculty and staff who wish to use one of these rooms can check the room schedules and classroom use procedures on our Schedules page. For all other campus classrooms, reservations must be made through Academic Space & Scheduling. Registered student organizations may reserve spaces through the FSU Student Union.
Classroom Technology: Lecture Rooms
In Art History lecture rooms (G40 & 2041), instructors must have a TEC account (renewed each semester) to use AV equipment. If you are the instructor of record for a course, you automatically have a TEC account for that semester. If not, visit the TEC website to set up or renew your account. Once you have an account, it works in any FSU TEC classroom. Classroom Support provides on-site help in TEC classrooms weekdays until 9 pm, via the problem report form on the TEC website, or by phone: 644-2811.
Classroom Technology: Seminar Rooms
Art History seminar rooms (G41 & 2038) and computer labs (1021 & 2040) are maintained by the Art History Media Center and the College of Fine Arts IT staff. Please refer seminar and lab equipment problems and software requests to Jean Hudson or submit help requests directly to CFA IT .
Parking
Visit FSU Transportation & Parking for complete deatils and the Parking Map.
• Always park nose-in. You will receive a ticket if you back into a space.
• Pay attention to signs in lots and garages. They tell you exactly who can park where and when. Rules are strictly enforced.
• Lots are sometimes reserved for special events. Sign up for Transportation Announcements to receive one email notice each evening listing all lot reservations on the following day.
Visitors: If you are visiting the Department of Art History and do not have a permit, see visitor parking options here. If you need assistance, please contact the main office (850-644-1250) at least a day ahead of time.
Students: If you want a space near WJB, arrive very early in the day and work or study until class time. Otherwise your best bet is a large lot such as the Call Street Garage, Civic Center lot (a short walk), or the Stadium (a longer walk or a short bus ride). Campus busses are very reliable and can be tracked in real time with TransLoc, part of the MyFSU Mobile app. The closest garages to WJB are Traditions, the Call Street Garage, and the St. Augustine Garage. Most parking garages allow commuter (overnight) parking on the top floor; check for signs indicating where commuter parking is allowed.
Many gated staff parking lots are available to students after 4:30PM each day (the gates open automatically). Be sure to remove your car before the posted enforcement time the next morning.
Civic Center Parking: All University students, faculty and staff with a valid permit can park in any available space in the Tucker Civic Center main parking lot Monday through Friday from 7:30AM to 6:00PM. To access this parking lot of over 600 spaces, use the Pensacola Street entrance, across from the Law School parking lot. Be prepared to present your FSUCard to the attendant, if requested. NOTE: Parking is not available overnight, on weekends, or during Civic Center events. Sign up for Transportation Announcements to receive email notifications of lot closures.
