General Financial Information

Art History majors and graduate students pay an $80 equipment fee each semester that they are enrolled in FSU classes, to maintain technology in Art History labs, media center, seminar rooms, and library.

The Congress of Graduate Students

This division of the Student Government Association provides financial support for students to attend and participate in conferences. 

Provost's Office Research and Creative Activity Travel Grants

The Provost’s Graduate Student Resource Center (GSRC) offers these grants of additional funding for doctoral candidates to attend or participate in conferences. 

College of Fine Arts Travel Grants

The College periodically provides grants for student research and presentation travel; email Emily Johnson with questions.

Support for Finding & Acquiring External Funding

FSU’s Office of Graduate Fellowships and Awards (OGFA) assists current graduate students with identifying and applying for external fellowships, scholarships, grants, and awards. With the guidance of experienced faculty advisors and the resources provided by OGFA, Art History graduate students have a long tradition of success in earning generous external funding for research travel. Art History Graduate Awards

Department Assistantships

MA Assistantships

All applicants to Art History MA programs are automatically considered for research assistantships with full tuition waivers, on the basis of past record and future potential as professional art historians. Each recipient works ten hours per week for the department in the Art History Media Center, the department office, or the Museum of Fine Arts; occasionally a second-year MA may be appointed to work with a professor. Please note that although our final application deadline is May 1, MA applications must be received by February 5 to be eligible for funding.

Doctoral Assistantships

All Art History doctoral applicants are automatically considered for teaching assistantships with full tuition waivers for a minimum of three years. Applicants may also be nominated by the department for prestigious University fellowships offered each year to a select number of incoming graduate students with outstanding scholastic records. Please note that although our final application deadline is May 1, PhD applications must be received by January 9 to be eligible for University fellowships.

Department Awards & Resources

Helen J. Beard Conference Travel Grant

This grant provides up to $1,000 annually to cover the costs of conference registration, travel and lodging for graduate students giving papers at scholarly conferences. The application should name the conference, provide the title of the paper to be presented and detail expected costs and should be accompanied by evidence that the paper has been accepted (e.g., an acceptance letter or a copy of the program). Helen J. Beard Undergraduate Research Scholarship

Undergraduate majors in art history conducting advanced research are eligible to apply for scholarships in support of their projects. Honors thesis and DIS students are especially encouraged to apply. All scholarship applications will be reviewed by the faculty and students will be notified by email if selected. Award amounts will be in the range of $500 to $750. The Department offers a limited number of scholarships per year. Applications are due September 15 for the current academic year. Friends of Art History Dissertation Research Award

Up to $1,000 to cover the cost of travel and living expenses to conduct research for a PhD dissertation. Available to doctoral students whose dissertation prospectus has been approved. The application should detail progress on the dissertation to date, explain the need to travel and provide an itemized budget of projected expenses. The award may be held once. When funds are available, the department will announce and solicit applications in the spring semester.

Gerson Medieval Doctoral Research Grant

Up to $2,000 to support doctoral research for students working in the area of Medieval Art History (Western European or Byzantine). When funds are available, applications are submitted to the department chair and are considered on a rolling basis, and must address the proposed research plan and proposed expenditures in detail. Research funded by the grant must be completed no more than 12 months prior to or after the date of the award. Recipients may receive the award once annually. When funds are available, the department will announce and solicit applications.

International Programs Teaching Appointment

Each summer, the department may appoint up to two doctoral students to teach in Italy on the FSU International Programs Florence campus. Appointees are each responsible for teaching a single section of ARH 2000 – Art, Architecture, and Artistic Vision in one of two six-week summer sessions. NEWBERRY RENAISSANCE CONSORTIUM

The Department of Art History is part of the Newberry Center for Renaissance Studies Consortium (CRS), institutions which promote the use of the Newberry and Folger Library collections and provide funding for travel to attend Newberry workshops and conferences or to conduct research.
