Applicant information:
MA Art History
Entrance into the Art History MA program usually requires a Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in undergraduate art history courses and reading knowledge of one foreign language. Admission and funding of students is competitive and based on scholastic record, statement of purpose (outlining relevant experiences, background, research interests and professional goals), three letters of recommendation, research and writing proficiency, and language capabilities.
MA in MCHS
Prospective students should have a Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in Art History or a related field, such as anthropology, archaeology, art, classics, or history, and reading knowledge of one foreign language, which may be completed concurrently with the master’s program. Admissions are based on scholastic record, letters of recommendation, foreign language proficiency, and a writing sample.
PhD in Art History
The entering student is expected to have in hand a completed Master’s degree in Art History with a written thesis or equivalent demonstration of research and writing skills. A reading knowledge of one foreign language is required for admission to the doctoral program.
The application season opens on November 1. For all graduate programs, review of applications begins on January 1 and continues throughout the spring semester until all positions are filled. The final application deadline is June 1.
For funding consideration, doctoral applicants must submit all materials by January 9 and MA applicants must submit all materials by February 5.
During the application process, you will be uploading the following documents electronically:
1. A statement of purpose, consisting of a narrative (1-3 pages) that addresses the following:
- Your interest in the field
- Professional or academic background
- Area of intended specialization (also indicate with which professors you intend to work)
- Career aspirations
- Your particular interest in Florida State University
2. Your curriculum vitae or resume, following the appropriate template below:
3. A recent paper in art history, preferably in your major area of interest, that demonstrates your abilities in research and writing.
4. Unofficial copies of transcripts from all higher education institutions attended.
Note: You will still need to send official copies of your transcripts to the Office of Admissions, but an unofficial copy will be sufficient for the department to review your application. GRE scores are not required for the application to Art History’s graduate programs.
5. Three letters of recommendation, preferably by Art History faculty with whom you have studied. You will identify three recommenders in your application; they will then be notified by email that their letters are requested.
6. International students only: TOEFL scores
Note: All students who wish to claim Florida residency for tuition purposes will need to complete and fill out the Online Residency Form with their application. You will have to do this even if you are currently attending Florida State University, or have already received a degree from FSU.
