Art History Assistant Professor Erika Loic co-edited La Edad Media proyectada: El pasado medieval ibérico en la creación audiovisual en lenguas portuguesa y española (The Projected Middle Ages: The Medieval Iberian Past in Luso- and Hispanophone Audiovisual Productions). The digital version of the book is available open access and can also be purchased as a physical copy through the website of the publisher, Iberoamericana / Vervuert.
The overwhelming majority of publications on the Middle Ages in film and television focus on Anglo- and Francophone cinemas, and especially the reception and reinterpretation of medieval history unfolding north of the Pyrenees. This edited volume with multilingual contributions (Spanish, Portuguese, and English) brings together a set of pioneering studies on medieval-themed cinema and television from Spanish and Portuguese creators and industries. The volume delves into recreation, invention, accuracy, and artistic vision. In addition, contributions analyze the extent to which visions of the medieval period reflect certain uses and misuses of the Middle Ages as a means of addressing issues of identity or nationality. This volume highlights the need for cross-cultural and interdisciplinary approaches to cine-medievalismos, bringing together perspectives from Medieval Studies, Art History, History, Film Studies, Musicology, and Literature.
In addition to co-authoring the introduction, Dr. Loic contributed a chapter on filmmaker Luis Buñuel, “Spiritual Visions of Time and Space in Luis Buñuel’s Cinematic Medievalism.” Department of Art History alumna Nina Gonzalbez also contributed “The Historic and the Imaginary: Seville’s Medieval and Early Modern Monuments in Film and Television.”
