FSU Art History, Art, & Science Come Together in Festival of the Creative Arts Event this Saturday

College of Fine Arts
Professor Stephanie Leitch will share her interest in the visual history of weather with the local community in the Festival of the Creative Arts event “It’s the Weather!” on Saturday, February 7, from 10am to 2pm at the Challenger Learning Center. The Festival is a free monthlong FSU celebration that brings together the arts and sciences in community events for K-12 students and families.

On Saturday, Leitch will give a talk, “Why Visualize the Weather,” describing the ways artists, printers, and other image-makers have attempted to illustrate weather throughout history and what this says about our understanding of natural phenomena. Art Education Professor Sara Scott Shields will guide children through “weather weaving,” a project inspiredby artist Nathalie Miebach, who transforms weather data into woven sculptures and musical compositions. Shields will also lead an activity on the anatomy of snowflakes, inspired by 19th-century meteorologist and photographer Wilson Bentley. Interior Design Professor Marlo Ransdell will guide students in exploring wind and motion through a hands-on pinwheel activity, using laser-cut pieces she designed and fabricated in Studio D at the Carnaghi Arts Building. And Keith Roberson, Professor of Digital Arts at FSU, and Eren Gümrükçüoğlu, Assistant Professor of Composition, will also present a new digital art-and-music piece.
