INDIGENize Climate JUSTICE

We acknowledge that the Florida State University campus is located on land that is the ancestral and traditional territory of the Apalachee Nation, the Muscogee Creek Nation, the Miccosukee Tribe of Florida, and the Seminole Tribe of Florida. We pay respect to their Elders past and present and extend that respect to their descendants and to all Indigenous people. We recognize that this land remains scarred by the histories and ongoing legacies of settler colonial violence, dispossession, and removal. In spite of all of this, and with tremendous resilience, these Indigenous nations have remained deeply connected to this territory, to their families, to their communities, and to their cultural ways of life.

In our current age of climate crisis, it is absolutely vital to listen to, learn from, respect, and honor Indigenous voices. We must recognize the ongoing relationships of care that Indigenous Nations maintain with this land. We extend our gratitude as we live and work as humble and respectful guests upon their territory. We hope to continue to stand against ongoing attempts to destroy their ancestral and traditional territory.

Young activists like Tokata Iron Eyes (Standing Rock Sioux) and Allen Salway (Diné, Oglala Lakota, Tohono O'odham), work tirelessly to protect this territory we live on. Through this exhibit, Indigenize Climate Justice, and our ongoing sticker campaign, we are striving to amplify their efforts in safeguarding our earth and its resources. In this vein, we encourage you to also learn about and amplify the contemporary work of the Indigenous nations whose land you are on and to endeavor to support Indigenous sovereignty in all the ways that you can, through this exhibit and elsewhere.
