Minor in Art History

To complete a Minor in Art History, students must earn 15 credit hours of ARH coursework with a grade of “C” or higher. Beginning Fall 2023, the minor requires:

  • ARH 2050 (3 credit hours)
  • ARH 2051 (3 credit hours)
  • one ARH course at the 3000-level (3 credit hours)
  • one ARH course at the 4000-level (3 credit hours)
  • and one ARH 4800 seminar (3 credit hours)

**ARH 2000 will not be credited toward the Art History minor.

Students can declare the Minor in Art History once they reach 60 total hours of coursework. Contact Emily Johnson to declare the Art History minor. For advising, contact the Art History Director of Undergraduate Studies, Dr. Tenley Bick.

Minor in Museum Studies

The Minor in Museum Studies is available to any FSU undergraduate who is working toward a bachelor’s degree and interested in a career in museums. The minor requires 15 hours of coursework and internship. For Art History majors, these requirements are in addition to the required 33 hours of courses. Students wishing to minor in Museum Studies are asked to first complete the online Museum Studies Minor Declaration form.

Total requirements for the minor (15 hours):

  • Required course, 3 hours: ARH 3794
  • Choose one, 3 hours: ARH 3854 or ARH 3930
  • Elective, 3 hours: See details below
  • Internship, 3 hours: See details below
  • Additional 3 hours Elective OR Internship

Required Courses – 6 hours

Two courses are required for the Museum Studies minor, and may be taken in any order although it is preferred that students take ARH 3794, Museum Basics, first. Please note that space in these courses is limited and preference given to Museum Studies minors.

  • Museum Basics, ARH 3794
  • EITHER Museum Object, ARH 3854 OR Curatorial Activism, ARH 3930

Elective – 3 hours (or 6 hours)

Electives are chosen from the following 3-hour courses:

  • Museum Education (ARE 4930, Special Topics in Art Education)
  • Introduction to Arts Administration (ARE 4932)
  • Archives Management (HIS 4080)
  • Public History Theory & Methods (HIS 4065)
  • Preserving Historic Sites & Spaces (HIS 4086)
  • Museum Anthropology (ANT 4041)
  • A Practicum course connected to a specific exhibition organized by an FSU professor

Please note that only specific courses can be used for the Museum Studies Minor elective; most Art History, Art Education and History courses do not fulfill the requirement. If your elective choice is not on the list, you must clear it with the Director of Undergraduate Studies, Dr. Tenley Bick.

Internship – 3 hours (or 6 hours)

Museum Studies minors must complete 3 hours of museum internship in any museum, preferably but not necessarily an art museum. If the student chooses 6 hours of internship (rather than 6 hours of electives), the hours may be broken up over two semesters (120 work hours each semester) or completed in one semester (240 work hours).

To register for internship hours, the student should first make arrangements with Dr. Tenley Bick to make sure their internship qualifies for the minor. The student then fills out the Internship Registration Form (below), which is automatically submitted to the Art History Academic Coordinator, who registers the student for classes. NOTE: The Internship Registration Form needs to be filled out before the semester in which you will be interning. For example, if you are planning on interning in the Spring, you will fill out the Internship Registration Form during the Spring Registration period that takes place during the Fall.

Questions or problems with this process should be directed to Emily Johnson.

The student’s grade for each internship is assigned by the Instructor of Record based on the following:

1) A journal of activities completed during the internship (30%)

2) Museum Supervisor’s Final Evaluation (30%)

3) Student’s self-assessment of the internship experience (10%)

4) A paper following the Internship Academic Requirement guidelines (30%).

For each 3-hour internship, a 5 page paper is required. If a student elects to take 6 internship hours in one semester, one 10 page paper is required. In this academic paper  you will analyze an aspect of museum practice based on your experience as an intern and it should include at least 6 academic sources. The essay should be typed, double-spaced, 12-point font with standard margins, and include bibliography and endnotes.  An extensive bibliography of suggested sources will be provided in the course syllabus at the beginning of the semester of your internship.

The student is responsible for maintaining regular contact with the Instructor of Record throughout the semester to discuss paper topics and progress. At the end of the internship, the student asks the the museum supervisor to fill out an Internship Evaluation Form. The student must submit this form and the required paper to the Instructor of Record by the deadline which the Instructor specifies at the beginning of the semester.

COVID-19 Update: All FSU students engaging in internships during the Summer 2020 must be held virtually or remotely. No in-person internships will be allowed or approved for internship credit.

Minor in Medieval Studies

The Minor in Medieval Studies provides focused, interdisciplinary training in the culture of the pre-modern era in the lands of Europe, West and East, and the cultures of the Middle East. The minor consists of 15 semester hours beyond the liberal studies and major requirements. The selection of a pair of courses in one of the following fields of concentration provides a focus for the minor: medieval art history (two ARH courses from an approved list); medieval history (two EUH courses from an approved list); and medieval texts and cultures (one ENL and one modern languages course from an approved list). Having established a concentration in one medieval field, the student then chooses 3 more courses from an approved list. These courses are to be distributed over two or three departments other than that of his/her concentration. Additional courses are certified on a semester-by-semester basis. Qualified students also may enroll in certified graduate-level courses for minor credit, with permission of the instructor. For Medieval Studies Minor advising, please contact Dr. Robert Romanchuk.
