Graduate Summer Fellowship
The Johnson Collection
Spartanburg South Carolina
Summer 2024
Stipend: $4,000
Deadline: February 29, 2024
The Johnson Collection is seeking a currently enrolled graduate student in art history—ideally with an emphasis in nineteenth- or early twentieth-century American art—to fill a research fellowship for the summer of 2024. Applicants for this position should be intellectually curious, self-disciplined, and possess excellent research and writing skills. This fellowship will entail research and content development related to TJC’s broad holdings relating to the American South. The program is designed to support doctoral students who are in their mid-graduate studies; however, PhD students who have advanced to candidacy may apply. This eight-week position includes housing on a local college campus and a $4,000 stipend for the selected fellow.
Fellowship responsibilities will center on comprehensive research related to the collection’s nineteenth- and early twentieth-century holdings. Study may also extend to other time periods represented in the collection. Research will be conducted at TJC’s Spartanburg office using its library and curatorial resources. Expenses for any approved research-related travel will be covered by the collection. Research on each assigned artist must result in a brief written biographical/critical analysis suitable for publication (digital/print), as well as notes for future investigation.
